Welcome To Recipes From the Heart

The old adage 'necessity is the mother of invention' was certainly true as I raised my children. When they were preschool age, my husband's company conducted a reduction of work force resulting in the loss of our only income. Have you ever read a recipe and had all the ingredients except one? Everyone has. So what do you do? Go to the store and buy the ingredient? That wasn't an option during those lean years. I learned to recreate recipes and create my own. I learned to enjoy opening the pantry and putting things together to make a new dish. I have kept the dishes through the years and still use them today. This site will feature my tweaked recipes and some I created on my own. Each of my adult books include recipes. I would love to know how you tweak my recipes for your family's taste or the supplies in your pantry.

Sausage Bread

Sausage bread is a great party food.  It is fairly easy to make and the first to be eaten by guests.  You will need:
  • 1 loaf of yeast bread dough.  ( I use Rhodes, but you can mix your own if you prefer.)
  • 1 pound of ground pan sausage.
  • 1 envelope of Lipton Dry Onion Soup.
  • 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese.
Rolled meat entrée with gravyAllow dough to thaw about 30 minutes to one hour so it is soft and easy to work with.  Meanwhile, mix the remaining ingredients and set aside.  Roll softened dough on a floured board until it is flat like pie crust.  It should be an oblong shape.  Place sausage mixture on the top of dough leaving a one inch margin around all the edges.  I usually press the sausage into the dough a little to stabilize it.  Beginning at one end, roll the dough like you would cinnamon rolls.  Seal all openings to prevent sausage from falling out in the oven.  Place roll on a cookie sheet.  Allow to rise about one hour.  Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until brown.  Allow cooked bread to cool slightly before slicing into 1" pieces.
